The staff was very helpful and welcoming. They even allowed us to check in a little early.

The close proximity to the town. They had nice shops and restaurants. This was an added bonus as we had expected a much more remote location. It was also close to several other wonderful villages that were worth the ten minute drive. Radda was our favorite.

It was like a dream. We were married in Siena and stayed at Spaltenna for the four nights around our wedding. Spaltenna made the whole wedding that much more memorable. It greatly exceded our expectations.

Parking was a little confusing. There was a man there to help us with our luggage but a clearly marked drop off area would help.

My wife, two boys (ages 17 and 20), and I were amazed at her 'perfect' this Tuscany castle hotel was. When a guest arrives at the property, it is as my son said, 'over the top'. The hilltop location provides excellent views. We had stayed in a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom suite with a large living room. It was very clean, very comfortable, and yet within the confines of a 900 year-old building.
The property'a ammenities are beautiful. The outdoor pool was clean and in a spectacular setting, the gym is spacious (although there aren't any free weights). The indoor pool is heated to 85 degrees.
We ate one dinner at the hotel and it was very good, but expensive. We were able to use a computer at the hotel to go onto the internet (for a nominal fee). The only disappointment were the massages. I would expect such a fine hotel to have a well trained massage staff. The massages were (of course) expensive, but they left a lot to be desired.
The hotel is about an hour's drive to Florence, and a 30-minute drive to Sienna.
Truly a wonderful experience.

Perhaps because the castello was not fully booked, evening service in the tavern was not always available. Also, the breakfast buffet was not particularly plentiful. On all three mornings, eggs and meats ran out and were not replenished quickly.

Even the standard double room we had had a beautiful view, which surprised us. As we hadn't upgraded, we expected a nasty view of the fire escape, which is usually the case! Highly impressed.

We thoroughly enjoyed our all to short stay at Castello di Spaltena. We would go there again should we be holidaying in the area and we would recommend it to any of our friends who might be planning to holiday in the area. If there were to be any complaint it would be about the almost continuous barking of dogs in the surrounding area which does rather spoil the oterwise beautiful surroundings but I am not sure that there is very much which the hotel management can do about this.

but not entirely. The bathroom was very small and only had a shower. This was not specified in the proposal.I have seen that most other rooms had much larger bathrooms and all with a bath.
TV-set was rather obsolete, and remote control was not working.

They dont seem really very concerned about what the customer wants, requires or needs. Many of the requests, quite common ones, were treated as difficult requests
ie) changing our plans not to go dine in the dining room - getting a menu for the room?????

This management company needs to relax and understand that their guests are there to relax and have a good time.

I would like to say all the staff were helpful but especially the restaurant staff who were helpful and courteous always and always very pleasant, I would like you to pass on my thanks to them.

It was very efficient and helpful. The only comment I would make that we had to check out early and there was no one available to provide us with a light breakfast.

My nap by the pool on the day of arrival was

Our stay was magical. The building and location are stunning and the staff were courteous and helpful, most particularly those working in the cafe and restaurant, who were absolutely charming.
Our initial room had a problem with the air-conditioning. Various other rooms were both offered and had the AC tested. Ultimately we were offered a better - and much cooler - room at the original price.

this is an exceptionnal hotel and the best food we had in Tuscany and we always stayed in very nice places . Our romm was very nice but there was an another room on top of us and we could here their presence even if they where not noisy poeple. I was told that this is one or two rooms like that and they should probably be avoided. For the rest everything was exceptionnal

The main charm of the hotel is that although it is of a very high standard it also very welcoming and totally relaxing. There are no 'rules'. The grounds are extensive and the views from the terrace amazing but perhaps a little more could be done to the gardens, i.e. more flowers/shrubs.

For the cost & quality, a queen or king sized bed would be prefereable over two twin sized beds pushed together.

I would mention the proximity to the Capannelle Vineyard...Visiting that place was wonderful & would ceratinly appeal to any wine enthusiast. I would also mention the proximity to the town & the ability to eat at several terrific osteria's all within walking distance to the hotel was also a nice feature.

the directions from the north should have directed us to take A1 and approach Gaiole from that side. The approach going the other way first passing through Radda was long and winding and caused some passengers in the car to get motion sickness.

I have known and stayed at the CdS for some 15 years. It is a wonderful place. It has grown (added a few rooms, tennis court, gym, etc) over the years in a tasteful manner. There was a change of ownership about 10 years ago and the original informal verging on the amateurish but totally enjoyable 'atmosphere' was lost. Still it has maintained a lot of its charm. Its main advantage is its location at the heart of the enchanted Chianti hills and its (relative) proximity to Florence and, of course, Sienna. Architecturally it is rather plain, but absolutely facinating.
The rooms, though entirely comfortable, are somewhat rudimentary. Especially the bathrooms are now reaching the stage when a thorough refurbishment is getting necessary.
Staff are polite and helpful, except reception, where, possibly because of the distance from parking/access can be a bit offhand and chaotic...
